2026.08.1003:36:22UTC+00Rupiah Softens After Persistent Decline in Consumer Confidence

The Indonesian rupiah slipped on Monday, trading around IDR 17,820 per U.S. dollar after briefly strengthening to about IDR 17,780 in the previous session. Sentiment weakened following data showing consumer confidence declined for a third consecutive month in July, hitting a 15‑month low amid persistent worries about current economic conditions and the employment outlook.

Markets were also cautious ahead of June retail sales figures due on Tuesday, after May data showed the sharpest decline in three years, pressured by elevated inflation and higher non‑subsidised fuel prices.

Still, rupiah losses were contained as the U.S. dollar index softened following weaker‑than‑expected U.S. employment data, which tempered expectations of further monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve.

On the domestic front, foreign investors returned to Indonesian government bonds and equities in July, ending several months of sustained outflows and lending some support to the rupiah. Traders also remained focused on President Prabowo Subianto’s pending nomination of a new Bank Indonesia governor, following the unexpected departure of Perry Warjiyo last month.
